Native Corn Starch
What it is
Unmodified starch milled from dent corn. It is the starch most dry pet food formulas already contain, and it labels simply as corn starch.
What it does
It gelatinizes when heat and moisture reach it, then sets as it cools. In an extruder that gives you expansion and a piece that holds together. In a baked biscuit it builds the crumb and helps the dough release from the mould. Because it is unmodified, it will firm up and lose some water-holding over time, so it suits dry products better than gravies.
