Instant Corn Starch
What it is
Corn starch that has been pre-cooked and dried, so it swells in water at room temperature. Spray-cooked versions disperse more smoothly; drum-dried versions give more expansion.
What it does
It thickens a cold mix, which helps when you cannot add heat or want to set viscosity before the cook. In extruded treats it adds expansion and a lighter bite. It also helps powders and coatings stick to a kibble surface.
Where it’s used
Dry food: expansion aid; helps topical coatings adhere.
Wet food: cold-process sauces and pre-mixes.
Treats: lighter, crisper extruded treats; body in no-cook toppers and mixers.
Supplements: thickener in powders mixed into water or food.
Livestock feed: pellet binding and fines reduction.
Forms and packaging: Powder. 50 lb bags; some grades in 25 kg bags.
