Dextrose
What it is
Glucose made from corn starch. Available as a crystalline powder, as an agglomerated powder that flows well and blends evenly, and as a liquid.
What it does
Dextrose browns readily in the oven, which builds color and roasted, meaty notes on biscuits and coated treats. It lowers water activity in soft products, and the powder works as a carrier for palatants, flavors and spices.
Where it’s used
Treats: browning in baked biscuits; humectant in soft treats.
Dry food: carrier in palatant and coating systems.
Supplements: carrier and tableting base in powders and chewable tablets.
Livestock feed: energy source and palatability aid; carrier in premixes.
Wet food: limited use.
